In what ways do you make your students feel valued?

Some of the ways I value my students is by asking them personals questions about their beliefs, interests, sharing stories about personal events.

My middle school students are pre-adults. I am helping to launch adults. They are made in God’s image and INCREDIBLY valuable. I think the most impactful way that I communicate to my students that they are valuable is to ask them questions and to get to know them. I offer God’s peace in all my interactions.

I show that I value my students by asking for their prayer requests and praying for them, finding out their interests and asking them questions about their personal lives.

This is partly walking the talk and partly giftings. Every student is important to me and relationship with my students is not something I have an issue with. They are both children of God and babes in Christ. I appreciate what James had to say about hankering to teach, it is a serious responsibility with a high level of accountability. Jesus enjoyed talking to the children and was here for them as much as any adult and we are to come to Him as children. They are not to be talked down to and I frequently learn a thing or two from them. Reaching out for their insights and checking their understanding and showing them that I am listening is an important thing. You can glean so much about a child by listening carefully to what they do and don’t say. It is a blessing to be with them and showing them I care and am ready, willing, and able to help with all sorts of things and to pray with them is key.

I try to ask each student something personal about themselves regularly and then bring that up again later. For example, if I know a student plays travel sports I make sure to ask them about their season regularly.
