I try to make each student feel special each day. I listen intently to what they have to say and let them know how important they are. I praise them for their hard work and good behavior in the classroom.

The primary way I try to make students feel valued is to listen to them carefully, trying to understand their thought process, and trying to see how and why they are responding to a question or to the material. I want to affirm critical thinking and open dialog. I want them to know that I value their thinking and learning process, not just parroting the correct answers.

I smile and greet them in the morning. I ask them about their sports, vacations, and interests. If they make a mistake, I tell them that I realize such things happen and have happened to me and others. I try my best to help them feel noticed and included.

I encourage my students when they succeed. When they don’t succeed, I try to understand how they can better grasp the lesson or discover where our communication failed. I try to remind students that everyone learns differently. Then we work together to determine how that student can better grasp new lessons.

I love greeting all our students in the hallway before classes begin. I like to ask them about what is going on in their lives, classes, or about special interests they have. I know they love to feel they are valued because a teacher took the time to really get to know them and care about them.
