I make my students feel valued by making a point to spend individual time to connect with each student. I communicate their strengths to them. I encourage them in their areas of growth. I hold them accountable and challenge them. I communicate the reasoning behind the lessons taught and required assignments. I tell them that they are loved by me, their peers, their families and by the Lord.

By telling the students directly that they are valued, by taking the time to interact about their lives, by bringing corrections for their benefit.

I always try to provide words of encouragement. I tell them that because something is hard does not mean that they can’t do it. I tell them that I believe in them and they are the reason that I love coming in to work.

I regularly tell them they are valued with my words. I also acknowledge the good behavior that I see in them and point out better ways to act when I see bad behavior. God has made clear that if we become a part of His family, He will both encourage the good and chastise the bad in our behavior and thinking. He says that love rebukes and is honest.

I try to make sure to know about the students lives outside of school (within boundaries) so they feel like they are known and valued not only academically but emotionally and spiritually. And when I ask I am prepared to listen rather than dismiss them if they don’t give me a quick answer. Taking the time to have real conversations with students makes them feel heard and valued rather than asking them a question and half listening while you type your lesson plans. Eye contact and intermediate responses go a long way in making a student feel valued in a conversation.
