It is inherent in the role. You cannot be a proper Christian educator and have no influence in mentorship. All examples of godly leadership that we see in Scripture not only instructed in righteousness but also gave individual attention to those they were instructing. Christian educators have a special opportunity, especially in smaller schools, to make a lasting impact on the lives of their students that they may remember for the rest of their life.

Yes, mentorship is something that I currently do outside of my school. I will find ways to do this within my Christian school. I mentor children who do not have families or homes (they are in CPS care). It is rewarding that I can walk beside them, guide them, teach them, and most of all lead them to God. I have seen many ask to be part of a church and it has turned their outlook of their situation around. This is important as a Christian educator.

Absolutely! I teach a high school leadership course, and one of the first units I cover is mentorship. Each student is required to choose a mentor and meet with them once a month. As part of this unit, I also offer to mentor one student myself (if asked). Each year, I’ve had the privilege of mentoring a female student, and we meet monthly outside of school for a meal or coffee. It’s been such a meaningful way to come alongside her and support her outside of the classroom. Additionally, this assignment has helped my students understand the value of being intentional about seeking mentorship and building those connections.
