Is mentorship something you’ve considered as part of your role as a Christian educator? Why or why not?

Yes, I employ mentorship in a big way. I connect with students who seem to need extra time and attention from an adult or may have a family that does not have transportation or are in a financial hardship. I will connect with the student’s family and arrange library days, take them to special events at the college or any number of free educational activities. Another teacher and myself held a birthday gathering at a local yogurt place for one of our low income students at the end of this past year.

I try to relay to my students that I am always available for them. Several students that I have had in the past have come to ask questions. I treasure and value that time. I think it is so important to make sure students know that we are there for them as mentors.

Throughout my life, I have mentired so many, and consider it a responsibility wherever God places me. It is what He requires of all His children.

Yes students are always asking questions, asking guidance, asking for direction. I always lead with positivity and encouragement, no matter their grade in my class – to work hard and go for your dreams. I was the 9th grade class advisor and mentored my freshmen class officers, guiding them with whatever help they needed. I always let my students know that I am here for them in any capacity and I am so happy when students want to continue their relationship with me outside of the classroom, either in my HG or during lunch or passing periods.
