Mentorship is an important responsibility for the Christian teacher, and it’s something we talk about a good bit at my school. It takes different forms for different teachers, and we need to honor those opportunities God gives us to mentor collectively and individually with students. Sometimes the challenges we face in the classroom lead to mentoring opportunities.

Yes. Building those one on one relationships with students is essential to building Christian community. It also gives students a level of accountablity for their actions.

Yes, we have groups integrated into our school day to encourage this.

I do consider mentorship as a part of my role as a middle school and high school teacher. Students who come into my classroom are not in some isolated bubble of Spanish content learning – they are still preteens and teenagers going through the many and varied ups and downs of life, and it is important to care for the whole student, their academic, social, emotional, and faith needs and walk with them through those ups and downs and the decisions they make throughout that journey.

As a teacher of teenagers, I find that mentorship is a natural part of my job. As a female teacher, I especially find that I often come alongside my female students, helping mentor them and guide them through life changes and life decisions, pointing them toward biblical decision making and helping them build relationships that are God-honoring – with peers, family, and in the community.
