Is mentorship something you’ve considered as part of your role as a Christian educator? Why or why not?

I have been assigned informally as a Freshman mentor, but formal mentoring has not been on my radar. I can tell that some of my fellow teachers are intentionally or unintentionally mentoring me and I welcome that relationship. Last year, I intentionally tried to build relationships with selected students, but it seems the ones I seek are not always the ones that God puts in my path.

I have thought of mentoring as part of my role but a small part with select students. I have lead Bible studies with students and taken special interest in some students. I have also gone on several ministry trips with students. But I never really thought of those as mentoring but it makes sense that it is.

Mentorship is something that I’ve considered as a part of my role as a Christian educator. And while I am a firm believer that mentorship is something that needs to be defined between the mentor and mentee. I allow these relationships to develop naturally before I seek out a defined role with the student. I also find that this role is expanded because of my role as a coach. The biggest challenge that I’ve found taking on the role as a mentor is time. There are so many responsibilities as a teacher that adding this role as a teacher can sometimes be unhealthy if not done with balance in life. For example, regardless of my role as a teacher, I will always be called to be a father and husband. And those take priority over mentoring.

Yes, I considered mentorship part of my role as a Christian educator. I specifically have a heart for the girls I teach and do a summer Bible study with to help them establish good spiritual habits and a firm identity in Christ before entering into middle school. It is my hope that I can continue meeting them once a month or once a quarter throughout their first year in middle school and maybe even establish a long lasting mentor relationship.

It isn’t something I have considered. I see myself as a part of a team of mentors. I teach music at a Christian School. I saw most of my students once a week. I try to support the classroom teacher mentorship. I would like to eventually take courses to nursing house to sing for the elderly. I would love for the music program to be more involved in the community.
