Mart De Haan stated that The Da Vinci Code casts doubt on the reliability of the Bible: “When I first read The Da Vinci Code, I could see immediately why it had been on the New York Times’ bestselling fiction list for some time. It’s a gripping suspense-filled murder mystery, and it’s controversial: it claims a basis in fact that, if believed as presented, would contradict the story line of the Bible and give us a radically different Jesus. One of the main characters, a fictional Harvard professor, lends an upscale air of credibility to [Dan Brown’s] claims that the real truth about the Bible’s origin has been a carefully guarded secret of the church.” Why would those who have not looked into its historical development readily accept allegations against the Bible? What would be a more truthful and appropriate response to these anti-Bible claims? - Discussion Forum - Artos Academy (BETA)

Many people tend to be easily swayed by something that “sounds” accurate or plausible, without taking the opportunity to investigate and determine the truth for themselves. A more appropriate response would be to direct people with these claims to scholarly writing that delves into the differences between the fiction of the book and historical facts.

We have a sin nature and Satan that can easily pull people away from the truth. It is simpler to read from a best selling book and just believe it instead of doing research and looking at actual facts. I believe being a light to those who question is a Christian’s best response.

Everyone wants to share their opinion on matters, but don’t want to research to debunk it. The more truthful would be to research and get facts relating to the Bible.

In our current cultural and within our own sinfulness, we desire to be able to “ok” sins. So with that, I think we look for anyway we can downplay the Bible’s authority. The Da Vinci Code, like other works, give a palatable way to entertain those desires. With being informed about the Biblical history and canonization of Scripture, there is a safety in knowing God has preserved His word, It carries His authority into our lives and ultimately provides us the plumb line of what sin is and what the gospel message is.
