I did a math lesson on the parable of the lost coin. I explained the importance of the coins and why they wore them. I explained how important and valuable we are to God. Then I went on with the value of coins and counting them.

I teach Health and PE for high school students, so one example of an interactive lesson could involve nutrition and keeping a daily food journal where the students write down the foods that they are consuming throughout the week. This would create opportunities to discuss how the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and why it’s so important to consume nutrient dense foods because we are taking care of the body that God has given us. There would be opportunities for the students to share how they felt after eating fruits and veggies as opposed to processed foods and junk foods. There would also be a reflection time to share at the beginning of the week and at the end of the week and compare and contrast how their diet changed and how it made them perform in school mentally, physically and in their prayer life with God.

A history lesson on World War Two might begin with an overview of the various belligerents and discussion on the Nazi Holocaust before turning to Scripture to examine the origins of the Jewish nation and consideration of just and unjust war in the Old Testament. It could land in a discussion on the decision of the US to use the atomic bomb at the close of the war and whether this was justified.

As a middle school English teacher, it is a blessing to teach my students how to read and study the Bible by using the reading strategies and literature skills that they’re learning in class. For example, taking a Psalm and identifying and explaining the types of figurative language that King David uses in his writing.
