Although parents are required to volunteer a set number of hours per school year, many parents use their skill sets to off-set the cost of tuition. We have builders, handymen, painters, cleaners and an electrician available to help us, and this is just at our middle school campus. I would love to see parents help as room parents at middle school, helping to organize events and such.

I’m wondering about hosting a post prom event at the school. This would entail individual families manning the post for activities. Example- parents run the wide game of capture the flag outside, setting it up, monitoring the group, tearing down, etc. If students want a campfire that night, make it available from 10-midnight, with one family responsible for bringing all that’s needed and for the monitoring of the group while it’s implemented. Clearances required. This would allow parents to do what they’re good at to provide the students with a safe and healthy environment for post prom activities.

A way that I might be able to include a parent’s skill set is to have them come in and show/teach the course about their skill in a capacity that relates to a topic we are covering.

I could invite Hispanic parents to speak to my course about their country of origin. I could invite parents to chaperone field trips. Last year, a mother volunteered to shampoo my classroom rugs because her son had mentioned they were getting dirty.
