Meeting with a parent when their child is in need of support. Start with prayer, listen intently and encourage. Secondly, send resources to the parent that they can use with their child… engage both parents whenever possibe.

It would be nice to set up a program where parents can come in and teach the students a trade, based on their occupation.

Some parents may be gifted in math and be able to come help a student who is struggling or one who is advanced to be challenged. Some parents love to decorate so they can help with classroom decorations for parties or holidays. Some parents can’t come to school but would love to use their love of baking to send treats. There are creative ways to work with schedules and giftings that wil involve parents in a way that doesn’t feel laborious.

One of the responsibilities we have as Christian educators is to provide Godly examples of adults who are living their faith out in a real, tangible way. I teach Bible and having parents visit my course to talk about their testimony and their faith is a great chance for our students to see someone, other than their teachers or grown-ups, living out their faith. It helps our students see that they can be a follower of Jesus no matter their career or calling. We have Chapel each week and the weeks that seem to make the greatest impact are the weeks that someone comes to speak who isnt a “professional Christian” (IE: Bible Teacher, Youth Pastor, etc…) Using parents during special Chapel services or during a graduation event are great opportunities to share in the mission of pointing their kids to Jesus.

I could ask parents to help with our Shakespeare party. I could also encourage students to use their parents as sounding boards for some of the writing assignments we do.
