I plan to incorporate parents by allowing them to use their knowledge and skill sets to serve as additional support for emerging STEM programs.

I begin the year with a “parent homework” assignment to learn about the students from their parents’ perspective. It will be a quick addition to ask parents what their strengths are and how they want to contribute to the classroom. Then I can adapt lessons and activities around the parent contributions.

If a parent is crafty, I could ask them to volunteer to lead the course in a unique craft/one related to content we are learning. We also have weekly chapel at our school, so a parent could come and deliver a message to the entire school.

Asking parents where their passion and talents lie then trying to incorporate those skills into the classroom.

I think that there are so many ways to include parents in their child’s education. If a parent has skills in outdoor living (camping/fishing etc..), they could come in one day and teach hands-on skills to the children. If a parent has experience with a sport, they could come in one day and help with gym course or talk about that sport with the course. There are so many ways to incorporate parents. The school just needs to take more steps to get to know the parents and know what skills they have to offer.
