In the younger ages, parents could be used to help students that need extra attention. It’s impossible for a teacher to meet all of the needs of the students. Having parents come in and listen to kids read, or encourage them with their spelling words helps some parents feel useful, helps the student, and honestly helps the parents who are so busy that they really don’t have the time to help their kids study.

We have parents all over our building. I think it’s great! Some volunteer in the office, some help with the lunch line, we’ve got many that come lead our chapel’s for both elementary level and secondary level. One woman leads our spring drama production every year- countless hours of work, and it’s all volunteer. We have a few on our sub list. One beautiful thing about being a small school, is that we are an “all hands on deck” kind of place. We all recognize that God has blessed us each with our own gifts and we depend on each other for each others strengths.

I love the idea of having parents teach a lesson. I once had a parent who was a science teacher at the high school level. She wanted to create a lesson related to our curriculum, and so she created the lesson and came to teach it. Another idea is related to one’s culture: you can have a parent come in and share something about the traditions, if they are from another culture, to teach the course and build a deeper relationship with the family.

We haven’t changed things up for awhile. We could offer some parental courses or Bible studies or event a fellowship group. COvid has many of our parent volunteers pulled in other directions.

If a student is struggling, including the parents in how to approach the student and what would work best for the student.
