Invite them in to be a guest speakers for career day, so students get to see what is involved in their parents day to day work. Engage the parents in school events, to help school organize, decorate, provide food, helping out with themes, etc.

We have recently had a grandmother come in to help at the front desk, since she is experienced with office work. We have had parents come in as guest speakers to discuss their expertise in dental hygiene and kidney care. This not only allowed students to become more aware of what they are putting in their bodies and how to take care of their teeth but also presented career ideas for after high school. I would like to further utilize parent skills when it comes to fixing certain projects around the school.

You could allow students parents to come in to educate students for a day about their particular skill set. You could plan a field trip around a student’s parent and their job or career.

One way is to let them introduce what their skill sets are. They may own a business and the course can take field trip to see how that business operates.

There are several ways that parents can help with their children’s school, using the parent’s skill sets. Parents are creative, have them help plan school events or decorate classrooms. Some parents are good with office work and numbers, have them assist with processes in the office. Play to the parent’s strengths and interests.
