I am working to build an Introduction to Trades program at our school and we have a lot of parents who are skilled journey people that are on board to demonstrate skills, talk about what it takes to get where they are at (expectations), and to supply tools and equipment. We also have some skilled alumni who are helping with work experience for some of our older students. Parents can be an endless source for resources, testimony, and volunteers.

In my kindergarten course, we spend a great deal of time learning about our community and the helpers that are in it. I love having parents with different jobs come in and talk to the kids about what they do, how they do their job, and how it relates to helping others. Also love finding out if any parents have any “hidden talents” that they can come in and share? You can paint – great, lets have you teach an art lesson! You love gardening – can you help with our science unit on plants?

When teaching a concept to the students, can have the students interview their parents to get their point of view. Parent will feel included and valued and the information that they provide to their child will enrich the classroom instruction.

I could ask parents to come in and share their personal testimonies.
