I believe most people will not be genuine, forthright, or open about what is going on “below the waterline”. We know that symptoms are usually and indicator of deeper issues; whether it’s physical, emotional, or spiritual. Only in relationships can we refocus and shift attention away from the symptoms and try and dive into roots.

Reframing helps people look deeper into the root of the problem and not just the symptoms. If we don’t allow the Spirit to deal with the root of the problem it will keep coming back in various forms. Reframing helps people see the bigger picture and the Spirit will show us how to deal with the root.

Shifting to the heart is at the root of why we do what we do. We want to reframe our presenting problem for our friend, so that the Spirit can be released to help them see what’s going on below being angry that the toilet overflowed.

Reframing the question helps move toward a larger story in their life – or even mine! They will look beyond the immediate problem they are dealing with to see if there are contributing factors – important relationships, immediate relationships, and how they think about God in the situation.

The shift from focusing on presenting problem to the deeper issue of relationship by reframing the question is important because this may open the opportunity for the person to tell you the story of their soul, their present, past relationships and if your relationship with them as you are speaking to them and their deepest relationship with God. The person can see you as a safe person to discuss his life with.
