This shift of reframing is so important because it will allow me to move forward into the deeper questions and open the door for entering the soul of the individual.

When we hear our FRIEND open their heart, God is giving opportunity for the tension to be raised for change to actually happen. Change almost never occurs without this tension. By looking at our friend’s problem with an abiding love to present the vision of how he can be closer in relationship with his Lord and Savior, we reframe the focus to find the root cause behind the behavior, the cause driving and motivating. This shifts the discussion in ways that can open thought, like “how did your wife see you in this behavior, or children.” How about are ou proud of this behavior. This brings the attention to where the Holy Spirit can move in the life of your friends soul.

This shift is important to know what was happening inside the person, to the actual root problem that the person is struggling with.

The presenting problem normally involves something “above the waterline”, to use Dr Crabb’s iceberg analogy. Usually the root of it lies “below the waterline” – in the deeper issue of relationships, whether it is his relationship with others, with God or even with himself. Therefore, reframing the problem to shift from above the waterline to below the waterline is important to address the root issue and to see growth in knowing God.

When we focus on the presenting problem we remain at a surface level (exterior world) of both the person we are interacting with as well as our own selves. In order to get into the deeper interior world where we can come to know, discover, explore and touch another and allow the Spirit of God to guide us in vision/wisdom to enter their soul, we have to move into the deeper relationship for SoulCare to occur.
