We shift away the focus from the presenting problem to the deeper issue or “story of the soul” so that we can truly know and explore the person which creates opportunities for us to know, to explore, to discover, and to touch the personal.

The presenting problem is not the real problem. It is merely a symptom of a deeper issue that exists under the waterline that the person may not even be aware of. Reframing a presenting problem helps the person being cared for see possible connections between his presenting problem and specific relationship issues in his life.

In reframing from the presenting problem to the issue of relationships, you are taking this person’s focus off the problem that looms before him, that is almost a distraction from moving into what lies behind it in his relationships. Satan loves to keep us distracted so we are not bringing God into the circumstances and looking further with the Holy Spirit guiding us. No, he would much rather we remain distracted where there is no growth or forward movement.

Without reframing, we stay in the confusion / ”mystery to ourselves” … reframing questions and conversations put us in a different headspace to allow the Spirit to move and uncover other elements/ deep roots/relational issues / things below the waterline that likely wouldn’t be addressed otherwise.
