An idea I have revolves English class for 6th graders, reading “Inside Out & Back Again.” The main character is a Vietnamese girl who escapes at the fall of Saigon. She’s also Buddhist. She is not welcomed as a refugee in the United States. I would like to integrate this unit, comparing Christianity to Buddhism and exploring what the Bible says about how to treat a foreigner in our land.

We identify what the Bible says and how it differs from Islam, and students are asked which of the differences do they feel is the most significant. I also have them reflect on the Great Commission, what is the value in learning about other religions, and what example does Jesus give us in interacting with people perceived to be different from us. There is room for improvement in assessment, as I did not include this in assessment.
