I will be starting my second year of teaching so I don’t have a lot of ideas from last year, but I am toying around with an idea for the first week of school using the book “Each Kindness.” In “Each Kindness” a girl moves into a new town and starts at a new school. Because of the way she looks, the students treat her unkindly. By the time the narrator realizes her hurtful behavior, the new girl moves away, and the ability to make amends is lost. I want to do a “silent debate” activity using the book, so in addition to my talking points being about peer pressure, I think I will use the verse about people looking at the outside and God looking at the heart, and a discussion about repentance and reconciliation. I think this book and activity can really shake up the course early in the year because it teaches us to use every moment for God since time is fleeting. The narrator’s regret and the book’s sad ending really leave an impression.

One assignment we do in 7th Grade American History is analyzing what the Bible says about slavery. This is one of the first lessons we do at the start of our unit on the Civil War. Many theologians and historians have claimed that the Bible supports slavery (along with many of the Southern slaveholders of the 1800’s). The lesson pits those claims against the Bible. Students analyze verses that are seemingly in support of slavery with those that are not. The conclusion through comparison is that the Bible clearly does not justify slavery.

I integrate Biblical truths when reading secular material. It allows my students to relate situations to the Bible and God’s truths.

When we discuss lines, line segments, and rays, I take some time to ask them which one is most like God and why and which one is most like the humans God made, and why. This allows for some thoughtful conversation about God’s eternality and our limits as humans, how God created time and is outside of His creation, how people will live for eternity (so it’s important to know where they are going), etc. I want to develop it even more with specific Scriptures to bring up for discussion.

I think science is one of the key areas that I use Biblical integration the most. I try to always bring the discussion around to the idea that God the creator is ultimately responsible for everything in science and that when we make scientific discoveries, we are simply getting insight into Gods creation.
