One of the critical components of my teaching is a regular opportunity for students to bring in current events. My objective is always for students to have a sense of what is going on in the world, but from the standpoint of are those who are making the news demonstrating Christlike behavior? Often the answer is no. So, I had to make some adaptations of periodically saying, “I want you to bring in a current event that demonstrates someone acting in a manner that is Christ-honoring.” The other aspect I’ve had to deal with is how divided and politicized current events quickly become, and what I am hearing the students voice are the biases, and yes, even hatred, which their parents espouse. I find it incredibly difficult to fight what they hear at home. Nevertheless, we persevere and use current events to understand and discern values and actions that honor God.

I look at the dance piece “Revelations” by the amazing dance company Alvin Ailey. It is done to old spiritual hymnals and has been done for decades by the company. I talk about what this means as Christians, the impact it has on the dance world, and how these deep historical and biblical songs and ideals are still relevant and being preformed today.

I have just begun my Christian educator journey this year so I loved scrolling through the comments getting ideas on what I can further implement. So far I have gotten to do a few biblical integrated assignments with my kids (aside from teaching Bible curriculum daily). In the beginning of the year we talked about how God created us all unique and they each designed a picture about themselves and their interests. We also stop in our Social Studies curriculum a lot and talk about how although these things happened throughout history that were terrible (Great Depression, Holocaust, etc.)- How would a person with hope in Jesus react differently amidst these trials?

One Biblically integrated assignment or assessment is that we do each year is to read different accounts of creation myths and then compare it to the true creation account in the Bible. The students do several assignments within this unit. At the end, they can articulate the creation story from Genesis and they can compare it to some differing views.

When teaching through the the life and ministry of Christ I challenge students about the differences between the synoptic gospels and the gospel of John. Then choosing an event of Jesus’ ministry we explore at depth from all the different viewpoints in scripture that very event. Noting the details one author may have overlooked or added. Then a more engaged discussion takes place about the event and how the truths taught can best be applied to our lives today.
