I use Biblical Integration in all of my essay assignments. One of them is for the book Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring. During the reading, the students take a close look at the Hero’s journey. For the essay they compare and contrast one of the character’s hero journey to one of the biblical character’s hero journey. Of course, there is always room for improvement. Every year I reevaluate what I am teaching, and the assignments that I am giving.

I want to go into why God had the Israelites take a census when they were in the wilderness. God knew how many people there were, so why? I think it will work well for my statistics course.

As an ESL teacher, I do not have any biblically integrated lessons. I did mention early a lesson that I collaborated with the 4th grade science teacher teaching the earth’s rotation and revolution and then weathering and erosion. I think I could ask students some questions to point them to God as a Master designer with the tilt of the earth’s axis. I could also incorporate ideas of creation and ask them questions about people’s responsibilities to care for the planet. I also have a pretty extensive phonics program. I am wondering how to integrate the Bible into that. Any ideas?

I incorporated a question on my first unit test that requires students to elaborate on why the Israelites needed the Levites to be responsible for weights and measures. Basically, there must have been some inappropriate business transactions and I want students to recognize that God is fully aware of mass and weight and distance and time, and that He knows when we try to cheat each other.

I have a power point lesson on the potter’s wheel for my high school students. The first slide is Scripture that refers to how God created and formed man from dust. The next few slides go into the history of the pottery wheel. I have included a you-tube video of a man making 159 pots in one hour for fun. I have a slide that has written instructions for forming a pot with action words that are high-lighted. I tell the students to think about Jeremiah 18 where it describes God as a potter having trouble at His wheel because His people refused to obey Him. Most of the students love the pottery wheel and they are chomping at the bit to begin but I have some who are timid. For the ones who seem unsure, I get in there with them and explain how hard the wheel was for me too. I work with them long enough to make them feel comfortable enough on their own or I pair them up with a partner. I love this lesson, but when I think of improvement, I believe I need a clear rubric to what I expect from them.
