While I have a long way to go with biblical integration, I have a favorite lessons where it comes fairly naturally. In science we have a lesson on animals and their adaptations. We go back to the beginning of scripture and read to remind ourselves how God created them and how he gave the task to Adam to name them all. We take a look at all the adaptations of a giraffe first. There are several amazing things God did for the giraffe, such as gave it an extra strong heart so it can pump the blood up its long neck, the ability to sleep standing up, and it only requires about 30 minutes of sleep in 24 hours so it can be alert to its predators. There are several more and as we talk about each one the kids are more and more amazed. Then we also get to discuss creation versus evolution. Evolutions would say those adaptations happened over millions of years, but from our reading in the Bible we know God created them this way and just looking at these adaptations points us to an all knowing, very ordered not happenstance, creative God. The students then research an animal of their choice to discover more of God’s handiwork. I think I could also include the scripture about he takes care of the lilies of the fields and the birds of the air, how much more does he care for you his child. That could lead us down another great path!

I use Biblical Integration in all of my essay assignments. One of them is for the book Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring. During the reading, the students take a close look at the Hero’s journey. For the essay they compare and contrast one of the character’s hero journey to one of the biblical character’s hero journey. Of course, there is always room for improvement. Every year I reevaluate what I am teaching, and the assignments that I am giving.

I want to go into why God had the Israelites take a census when they were in the wilderness. God knew how many people there were, so why? I think it will work well for my statistics course.

As an ESL teacher, I do not have any biblically integrated lessons. I did mention early a lesson that I collaborated with the 4th grade science teacher teaching the earth’s rotation and revolution and then weathering and erosion. I think I could ask students some questions to point them to God as a Master designer with the tilt of the earth’s axis. I could also incorporate ideas of creation and ask them questions about people’s responsibilities to care for the planet. I also have a pretty extensive phonics program. I am wondering how to integrate the Bible into that. Any ideas?

I incorporated a question on my first unit test that requires students to elaborate on why the Israelites needed the Levites to be responsible for weights and measures. Basically, there must have been some inappropriate business transactions and I want students to recognize that God is fully aware of mass and weight and distance and time, and that He knows when we try to cheat each other.
