Seniors, as a response to their summer reading on King Arthur, learn about journalism – how this writing is different, look at an article about chivalry dying, consider what God says about honor and respect and valor, then write a persuasive article in journalistic style stating why they think chivalry is alive or dying or dead, citing examples from the King Arthur book and the article and the Bible for their arguments. This assignment works well and stirs up a lot of encouragement to be better people – treating each other with respect. It would be better to include presentations to further class discussion and consideration of this topic as well.

In one of my high school English classes, I teach Screwtape Letters. I teach the unit as a bible study and at the end of the book, the students have a chance for self-reflection, looking for areas in their lives where they are most tempted to stray from God.
