When my 7th graders learn about Islam and Muhammed, we also look at an article that compares 4 differences between Islam and Christianity. We identify what the Bible says and how it differs from Islam, and students are asked which of the differences do they feel is the most significant. I also have them reflect on the Great Commission, what is the value in learning about other religions, and what example does Jesus give us in interacting with people perceived to be different from us. There is room for improvement in assessment, as I did not include this in assessment.

Our ELA curriculum is not biblically based and includes many story excerpts exalting bad attitudes as if the character in the story is intitled to feel the way he/she does. One such story is, “My Superpowers”, by Dan Greenburg. The lesson is regarding Cause and Effect. Greenburg’s story ends with him as a children’s book writer. In his series “The Zach Files”, he uses the actual name of his real-life childhood bully. He implies that this is his revenge on him. Integrated in this lesson is the opportunity for sixth-grade students to search for and share Bible verses regarding revenge, forgiveness, and overcoming. Students then share their Bible verses as a class. I will add others that they do not mention. This exalts the Word of God over their own feelings, and teaches students to look to God’s Word for answers to life’s questions.

In Science lessons when I teach Fossils, I teach through a biblical perspective integrating verse from Genesis about creation. Students are interested in comparing information from the Bible and learning.

In my phonics lessons I often have biblically integrated lessons. Whatever sound we may be learning for the week, I tie in some sort of tangible item with a scripture to help the students incorporate the Bible into their daily lives.

I teach The Lord of the Rings in my eighth grade English class. I connect scripture to many of the portions of the story. One of my essays assignments is to write about the elements of evil in the story. How do these evil creatures and or objects tempt and or cause characters to fall from grace or resist? Some of the scriptures I offer to the students are Romans 3:23 and Romans 6:23. They are asked to add biblical support for their answers.
