As an ELA teacher, there are so many opportunities to integrate Biblical truths in discussions of the novels that we read. Literature, whether Christian in nature or not provides opportunities to relate cultural ideas expressed in the stories to the truths of Scripture. In some cases, the application is evident, but in others it is a good exercise of discernment for students to try determine or debate topics using Spiritual truths.

When I am teaching units on health, I encourage students to go to God’s word and find passages of scripture that talk about what it means to live healthy? To understand that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. Once students have gathered some passages and scripture, they are put into small groups to share what they have found about what the bible says about physical exercise, nutrition and how to take care of our bodies.

Integration of mathematical concepts and the Bible is paramount to a student’s understanding of math in the world we live in. I tie math concepts, with current events and what the Bible says about it. Sometimes the math concept , probability, leaves things to chance. God didn’t leave things to chance, He didn’t estimate, in creation His measurements were calculated and exact. God didn’t cut corners in creation, He didn’t cut corners creating you, He wasn’t confused or questioning how to create. As students grow in their walk with God, taking the smallest of math concepts to Him in prayer is more than possible for Him. In Geometry, shapes, angles, measurements, etc. are the basis for proofs. Christ is our “PROOF”, we spend our lives proving we are His. In all we say and do, our life is a reflection of Him, proof we are His. Teaching students, that math is another extension of a way man tries to make sense of the world. Going to the Master Builder and Craftsman of our existence and all Creation, for understanding of the blue print of our life, is so beautiful. Mathematics can bring struggles for people, seeking the Author and Finisher of all Creation for insight into these problems, proves He is real. He will never leave you hanging when you seek Him for knowledge and understanding, fearing Him leads to wisdom. Challengeing students to find ways to glorify God through math, would be a great example of doing everything as unto the Lord.

I am co-developing a unit that will support youth in understanding their stories within a biblical worldview. We will use a series of story frames based on how Scripture describes God’s work and its intersection with human need, e.g., death, decision, life, and darkness, decision, and light. Students will be introduced to the book arts, learning how to use the structure of books to facilitate the processing and documentation of their stories from God’s perspective.

I recently did a lesson to begin our unit on solving systems of equations that talked about the importance of individual spiritual gifts. Each equation in the system provides important information, a key piece of the puzzle, that without it, the system could never be solved. Similarly, Paul told the church in Corinth that no one gift of the Spirit is more important to the church and to God than the others. All gifts are needed for God’s will to be done.
