At the end of our unit, they create their own “Starry Night” drawing/painting to illustrate what they learned and choose a verse on space or stars to go with it. (2nd grade). I have also had guest speakers come in and explain space from a Christian science expert’s worldview. This year the grandfather of a student who had worked directly on the Mars Land Rover project and on the new James Webb Space Telescope came in and explained the process of building those devices and what they are now telling us from space. He emphasized that the information scientists are learning from both of those pieces of technology is backing up the creationist point of view in many ways. The students loved talking with him and came up with a great number of terrific questions to ask him. Afterwards they wrote and drew about what they learned. In the past I have had an older lady friend come in and share about her experiences in the NASA astronaut program, which students loved hearing about. These have proven to be the most memorable types of lessons and projects for many of the students in helping to reaffirm their knowledge and understanding of the subject matter as well as of their faith in God.

Relate that to how humans have been able to create computers and how that relates to their being a creator. And in computer science, we are learning a language, and how God gave us the ability to speak to one another and create another language to create computers that can talk to one another. Another idea I have would be about the materials computers and electronics use and how God created all of those materials. I’m not sure exactly yet though how to integrate this well into programming and the concepts of it yet.

One of my ideas for an assignment is to be looking at the mission and vision statements for colleges that they are interested in and having them discuss whether or not there are biblical implications. I think it’s important to help give kids a firm foundation before moving onto college.
