I take notes in my Bible during sermons and Bible studies. I also enjoy studying with a friend or two so we can discuss it together.

I use several different sources for Bible Study. One of those is the Our Daily Bread devotional. However, I also often take notes during sermons, I mark my Bible when I feel I need to memorize it or remember/refer back to it at some later time. However the most effective Bible study technique I use is journaling. I either start out with scripture and pour out my heart to God to understand how whatever it is I am reading or referring to is applicable to my life. Sometimes I start with a prayer or concern or a praise report and move into my devotional time. What I have found through journaling is that this is the way God speaks to me and through me. When I have a concern and write it, later in my journal, I can look and see how God addressed it. This helps me remember and enables me to speak to others about how God moves in my life in real life situations. If there is a concept or Bible verses or passage I am struggling with, I might take out my Living Bible or my Bible app that has various translations to help me understand more clearly what I am reading and what it means for me.

I find it helpful to be in a Bible study to help me better understand God’s words. I need to hear the explanation and definitions of the verses broken down.

Utilizing my favorite commentaries has been helpful for me when I’m struggling with interpretation. I always read it for myself first, but then I use my resources (as I constantly encourage my students to do). I also use Blue Letter Bible to analyze the original language to help me understand what the verse means in its entirety.

I find it most helpful to go through scripture with a study guide.
