Teaching the concept of authorial intent, then getting students into the Word of God for the study is an excellent technique. Most people read into the Bible something that isn’t there. Then, they read out of it something that the original author did not intend. So basic Bible reading 101 is a great place to begin.

I like to write notes when I study the Bible. I also use Bible studies. When I read and then discuss using a Bible study, I relate the scripture to my life. I also hear other people’s opinions. All of this makes Scripture personal which helps me retain it.

One way I study the Bible is by reading one Proverb a day and 5 Psalms. A second way is when God highlights a verse(s), I meditate on those for a while until God highlights another set of verses.

I used to try a “through the Bible in a year” program but would get so frustrated and overwhelmed if I missed a couple days that I would eventually give up. Then the Holy Spirit helped me realize that reading a little of the Bible is better than reading none at all! So I just read 2 chapters a day, one chapter from Proverbs, and another chapter just reading through the Bible book-by-book. Since some books (like Leviticus) can be difficult to understand, I found a free commentary app for my phone called “Enduring Word Commentary” by David Guzik. He separates each chapter into little sections and then explains or expounds upon each section. So I’ll read a section of the Bible, then a section of the commentary, until I’m through my chapter. It’s been absolutely incredible all of the things God as taught me by reading His Word this way! I also highly recommend getting involved with a lady’s or men’s Bible study if one is available near you! There’s nothing quite like discussing the Word with other like-minded believers and sharing each other’s burdens.

One of the Bible-study techniques that I find most helpful is to first read a chapter of the text. Then I turn to my notes in my study Bible and read the notes for that chapter. Lastly, I reread the chapter that I started with. This has been helpful in understanding the context and meaning in the text without trying to take a verse out of context. It is time consuming but I have found it to be beneficial.
