I have found I must study the Bible when my mind is most fresh and alert. For me that is early in the morning, along with a cup of coffee! I often read the passage out loud to help me stay focused. I might even copy part of the passage that really stuck out to me in my journal and write what I learned. Another habit has been to read one chapter of Psalms and one chapter of Proverbs every morning to start my day and my study time as the psalms are usually prayers that lead me to talk to God, and proverbs are God’s wise words that I need to listen to. Some other helpful tools have been formal Bible study courses like the Precept By Precept ministry studies started by Kay Arthur. Studying with a group and discussing the passages every week is especially helpful as we are called to be a Body of Christ, not a “lone ranger” Christian.

I usually follow a plan. For example, on the Bible app, there are plenty of “Read the Bible in a Year” plans, some chronological, and I open this next to my Bible to know what I am reading for the day and it keeps me on a track every year. I always love to have a journal with me and write my prayers and thoughts of what I read, and things that God teaches me. I also like to have a cup of coffee next to me while reading.(:

I read through the New Testament in different versions and read the study notes as I read. I particularly love the study notes in The Passion Translation and The Spirit Filled Life Bible.
I have also done Bible Studies through church or many studies by Beth Moore. Sometimes, I follow a devotional plan.

Reading different translations helps me and reciting the verse(s) verbally, not just in my head.

One Bible-study technique I use is to refer to commentaries. Especially Strong’s.
