I’ve learned that this isn’t merely a career… it is a mission where we are constantly discipling the child’s heart for the kingdom of God. This course has also encouraged me to create space for each lesson where we have an opportunity to discuss “life’s big questions”. There are plenty of instances where these big questions might arise. I should look for them, anticipate them, and incorporate them so that we can tackle those questions in a biblical way.

Honestly, the one thing that sticks out more than anything else is when Dr. Black said that Teaching is a gift from God. I always thought that in the bible it was referring to teaching the bible and I’m sure it is, but that teaching kids can also be a gift that God gives, is a new way for me to think about it. I’ve always thought of my artistic talents as a gift from God but I can also see that I have the gift of teaching because God just leads through each lesson and brings ideas to my mind that amaze even me. It has made me even more enthusiastic about my job.

There is one thing that I want to be more intentional about this school year, and that is getting to know my students better. I want to be more involved in their lives and their relationship with God. I want to spend more time in mentoring and disciplining this year.

I have learned to not be afraid of sharing and teaching my students about scripture.

I have been encouraged to be very intentional about integrating the Bible into all that we are doing. Opening the eyes of students to see how God works through even the smallest things is a challenge but a worthy one. I have tried to be personal with my students, but I can see how sharing even more openly about the struggles of living a Christian life can actually be beneficial for students. I also appreciated the lesson on processing activities. I will be implementing some of the suggestions made to revisit thoughts and ideas even after several months of have passed.
