Share your story of how you came to be where you are in Christian education. Have you shared this story with your students?

My role is in evaluating and testing in one role and in volunteering at a new Christian school start up for our marginalized community in another. It has been a wonderful experience to work with these kids who have very different home lives than I am used to seeing in Christian school so there’s a new challenge of implementing these elements of faith where they are brand new and bringing parents in to be trained as well. I think its wonderful to see God’s people around our city from different churches rally together because they believe in Christian education.

I grew up attending secular schools and did not attend church regularly, but I have known that my calling was to be a teacher since the 2nd grade. I started attending church regularly when I met my now husband and it changed my life. I started developing a relationship with Jesus and growing closer to Him. The following summer I graduated college and was struggling to find a teaching job, so I applied to become a substitute teacher. I prayed that this would open up a full-time position for me. The day I got my badge and finalized becoming a substitute I was contacted by the school I currently teach at (a private Christian school in a neighboring state) about teaching 5th grade. I had never heard of this school before, but a friend knew a teacher there and recommended me for the position. The next day I went for an interview and was hired! I pulled over on the way home and cried and praised God! This position has provided me with an opportunity to grow even closer to Him while shaping young minds and helping them know God’s love. I have told my students this story, and I jokingly tell them that God gave me whiplash with how quickly things changed, but I am so grateful!

I honestly never wanted to be a teacher, but God presented an opportunity for me to become involved, and I decided to take a step of faith and start the journey. I have not really shared my story with my students – it is something I will think about.

My mother is a retired teacher. I would always say that I did not want to be a teacher. I graduated and worked with one of the largest jewelry companies there were. I was making good money, but working crazy hours. I quit my job and started tutoring at my church in the afternoons. One of the ladies that helped out told me that her job was looking for a part-time teacher in the infant room. I interviewed and got the job. Once again I still did not want to teach. Within three months I became the director of the center. I had both of my children while working there and they were able to be there with me. That was such a blessing. I worked every position there was at the learning center. When the Pre-K teacher was out I had to fill in for an extended period of time and loved it. I did not want to go back in the office. I heard God tell me that my season was up there, but I did not listen. One day I wrote down that I wanted my children to attend a Christian school, I wanted to teach in a Christian school, and I wanted my mentor to be seasoned and to learn all that I could from her and my mother of course. I placed that paper in my bible.
The Lord made me leave. I enrolled my kids at a Christian school. I volunteered at the preschool and began to sub at the elementary school. God continued to open doors for me. The K5 teacher was diagnosed with cancer and I became a long-term sub. When she returned I stayed as her assistant. God did it again. The following year I was hired on full-time as the second grade teacher.
I was on my path, but God will always guide you down the HIS path. I am truly thankful that I was obedient and finally accepted my calling. -
I first came to my school 11 years ago to do my student teaching. After getting married I was hired on to teach 6th grade. I taught there for 3 years until our daughter was born. I left teaching all together to work in college admissions because at the time we needed better pay. I worked in college admissions for 6 years. Once Covid hit I was forced to decide if what I was doing was what I was truly called to do. I didn’t want my now two kids to do school online. I happened to go to the schools website because I was just curious what they were doing the next year. Then I saw that they were hiring and felt the Holy Spirit tell me to apply. I prayed about it, talked with my husband, kids, and wise counsel and decided I would apply. I was hired back and taught my first year back in the classroom to 25 students in a huge double classroom with everyone wearing masks but it was amazing!! Now going into my third year I am getting to start a program for students with learning disabilities. This has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. I love sharing with my students and families about what brought me back to our school.
