After high school graduation, I just wanted to get trained to do something for which I could earn a living and get out of the house. Becoming a dental hygienist seemed like a quick solution. I pursued that path and went to work in a dental office and hated the work. God impressed upon me that I needed to return to college and get a bachelor’s degree. For me becoming an educator seemed to be what I needed to do. As a believer, I knew that was the path for me. Along the way, during my years of teaching, I have been further led to focus my time and attention on middle-school students. That was more than 40 years ago!

I will share this with my students at some point when it seems to make sense.

I was teaching in a Christian school, but towards the end of the summer I was told that the enrollment for the next academic year was too low, so I could not be hired for the next school year. Due to the fact that I lost my income, I desperately sought another job, so that my bills could be paid. It was not enough time for me to apply at various jobs and wait for an answer, so I chose to drive for the Lyft and Uber platforms. I was able to receive a quick and easy income at that time. While en route to pick up a passenger, I drove by a school building which caught my eye. I made a note of the name of the school, googled it, called the Principal and asked if they were hiring. Yes they were and I got the job.

I worked in my jobs and explored different career paths. God kept closing doors and only keep my education door open. So I work in the field.

I have shared my story numerous times and my students have been moved to tears, as well as developing inspiration from it that all things are possible through Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord!

After graduating with my Bachelor’s degree in Art, I went on for a Master’s degree in hopes to one day teach art. I got my first job as a graphic artist the last semester of my Master’s program. Then soon after got married. As a military spouse, I moved every 2 years. After having a child and a husband that deployed or went off to trainings often, I chose to stay home and raise my children. I never got that “dream job” and I honestly didn’t even know what that was-at that time, working as a graphic artist in a big city. As God would have it, he called me to teach. A small Christian school that was part of the church I was attending at the time needed a kindergarten teacher and I had a degree, and that was all that mattered to them at the time. Many moves and schools transpired between then and now, and here I am on my 7th year teaching and 4th school, teaching art to junior high and high school students. And this particular job/school came from a desperate mother seeking a godly Christian school to enroll her children into, that just so happened to have NO art program whatsoever. And so, I left teaching kindergarten, which I thought was my dream job, to teach art. The Lord blessed me with this gift all these years later, but the time spent being at home with my children when they were little, and teaching kindergarten helped mold me into the art teacher I am today and for that, I’m so grateful!
