Luther’s Religious world filled with Glory:
1. Glory of reason: scholasticism:
a. Christian thought-encountered the glory of human reason. Scholastic training. For Luther simply God’s way of doing things. Luther revolted against the glory of human reason and returned to simple faith.
b. Luther encountered in medieval piety, was the glory of human effort, the glory of human works. Luther was broken by both the glory of human reason and the glory of human effort or human works; neither helped him escape his burdens. He struggled with the theology of glory. Glory of human effort and works, especially monasticism.
c. Glory of political power, luxury of medieval church.
d. Luther had explained that when we focus on our own performance, that we will always and only fall short of the perfection of which God had set for the human creature in the first place. Human works and effort are man’s belief that we we can be saved. Through human effort alone. We are saved by Christ alone, we can never measure up to God’s grace and mercy. -
The theology of glory really has to do with how human reason and works are behind man’s belief that he will be saved. Through human effort alone.
