Knowing the Old Testament leads to a solid understanding of the New Testament. Many times in the NT the writer refers back to a passage in the OT.

The benefit of understanding the Old Testament is providing a solid foundation to understand all scripture and how it relates to us as Christians.

The New Testament and its worldview is built on the Old Testament and its teachings. The first five books of the bible describe the covenants of God and help us understand the bible and God’s plan of redemption. It puts in context, the need for a savior and shows us how the people, though they had the Law, could not live by the law and would never be able to do so, thus a new covenant was needed in Jesus – a covenant of grace rather than adherence to the law.

Understanding how the old testament fits together helps us understand God’s word in a more effective way. Since we are used to reading in chronological order, it is easy to get confused attempting to read every book within the old testament in this way.
