When we understand how the Old Testament fits together, we understand the full context of scripture. We have to understand the Old Testament to understand the full extent of the importance of the New Testament. All of it is God’s word.

I think one benefit is understanding the structure and how the Old testament works prior to this course. I hadn’t even observed the difference in size of the Old testament to the New testament. It is a very stark observation that just shows how much validity we should take into consideration when dealing with the Old testament and how it teaches us to relate to God and how God relates to us. Understanding how the structure of the Bible works is quite elegant as well because we are then able to read effectively through the time frame of the Old testament and understand when the prophets, the prophecies, and the histories all occur. It gives context to our reading and our understanding of God’s word.

You can not understand the new covenant without understanding the old. We can not receive the salvation that Jesus blood on the cross gives us if we don’t understand what we need to be saved from. There is ample significance in seeing our original design, seeing our flaws and faults, and then understanding and receiving the grace and mercy that our Savior brings. It’s also very important to see themes in the OT and the characteristics of those God used because they strengthen us for today and can help solve problems and refine us.

If we do not understand the way the Bible is structurally arranged, we might be very confused by the timeline. Different types of books in the Bible serve different purposes, so understanding them will help us understand the story as a whole.
