I live in a rural Christian community. Other religions have hardly touched the daily lives of the population I see everyday. My question is “What affect will other religions eventually have here?”

there are many religions in my community. seeing good effect. culture is much richer and multi prong approaches are taken to solve issues.

It hasn’t directly affected my home community, but in the broader community, other religions haven’t shown tolerance or interest in Christianity. I used to teach nursing in a tertiary institution and found that some religious groups can be extremely resistant when it comes to acceptable practices in their own community but are not acceptable in Australia. In the nursing field, for example, some women would not be allowed to work night or evening shifts, would expect extra time away from the job for prayers, would refuse to roll up their sleeves for hand washing, and would not be able to attend to the opposite sex. Whilst some students have overcome this issue and have gone on to be great nurses a great many have not been able to. This contributes to a division between those not of the same religious persuasion. Most women would rather not have to work shifts and night work. Especially if they have families. That being said, the behaviours of some Christians towards the customs of others of a different than their own definitely do not show the love and compassion that Jesus taught.

My community is quite multicultural for a small ranching/farming town. We have had artist move here from far and wide and they are wonderful. Most of them bring other beliefs such as spiritualism or Unitarian/ New Age. We have about an equal split of Hispanic and Anglo who are multi generational, some with land some not -BIG families. Mostly Catholic but several Pentecostal churches as well as other small mainline churches. We have Muslim, Buddhist, Sufi and many other beliefs. I wish I could say that folks here have come together and love/respect each other. This isn’t always the situation. I keep trying and I keep praying.

In my country, the dominant religions are Christianity, Hinduism, and Islam. We have learnt about each other’s religions in school and partake in each other’s festivities. It’s one thing we are proud of in our country, embracing and accepting one another’s religion which helps us to live in peace despite our different beliefs.
