This is something that I try to be very intentional about. This is as simple as just having a conversation with students. A conversation that doesn’t have to do with school but something that the student is interested in. I also try to make it a point to attend things that the students are involved in to show my support outside of the classroom. Going to games and other school related activities that my students are involved in shows them that I care.

      1. I make myself available to them by offering multiple office hours or they can make an appointment with me if they cannot attend to the office hours.

      2. I provide timely feedback on my students’ assignments to demonstrate that I care about their work and want to support their improvement. I have also observed that understanding their academic workload and major test schedule is significant to them. Additionally, in a secondary school setting, the burden of extracurricular activities can be overwhelming. Therefore, I make reasonable accommodations for the due dates of some assignments. They appreciate the flexibility, and it motivates them to work at their best to complete the tasks.

I can continue to meet with each of my students individually and pray for them throughout the school year.

Having completed my first year at the school I transferred into I plan on “tracking” my students throughout the remainder of their high school years – “pop in” visits so to speak. I also plan on having times where students can grab an iced coffee or tea with me in our school coffee lobby.

Each day I start with a prayer for my students. I allow them to tell me how they are feeling and if they have any prayer request, I will honor them during this prayer time. We end our day the same way. If I see that a student is having a more challenging day, I take the time to talk to them one on one. I allow them to tell me what I can do to help them have a better day.
