This lesson had great content that not only motivated students through teachers, but also motivated teachers. First, I would like to have more of an open-door policy set up for students, so they know I care and can come to me and have a safe space. I try to do this already, but with moving offices, this would be key to implement starting the next academic year. I also would like to continue investing in the students I focus on. This is such a critical time in their lives, I want them to feel loved and find joy in the every day.

This year I have been able to have one on one time with students who are struggling with behavior–I’ve been able to walk outside with them and gently encourage them to share what’s prompting the behavior. We’ve prayed and I’ve been blessed with giving them encouragement as we’ve brought it back to the Gospel of Jesus and the hope that God is ready to pour grace on their life. Next year, my position will be more tied to several students and rigorous classroom work (Math classes) but I pray I will figure out how to have that one on one time with each student. Perhaps, lunch with small groups or breakfast before school, and, of course, tutoring time one on one when they need it, will allow for opportunities to talk about life.

I’ve been out of the classroom for several years. I would like to restart my letter writing ministry. Im not always great in the moment, but students love receiving encouragement through the mail. Especially in our email/text culture, it’s refreshing when someone takes the time to write a letter.

One practice I’d like to put in place next year is to write students notes of encouragement. It always puts a smile on my face when a student draws me a picture or writes me a note. I realize I don’t do it enough back to them. I hope this would brighten their day and give them tangible evidence that I care about them.

One of my biggest goals I have for being a teacher is to make my classroom a comforting place. I did my best to decorate the room with fun lights and decor and play lofi music during course to help make my course work time a chance for students to take a deep breathe and relax a little while working on their graphic design projects. One of the ways I show my students that I care is that I will leave my door open at the beginning and end of the school day. The purpose for that is to allow students the opportunity to ask me questions or get one on one help whenever they need it.
