I have “awesome citations” that I give out to students for things such as being kind to someone, showing improvement, etc. The citations also had a section where I could write positive notes to my students as well. I just started it last year and my course LOVED getting those. Several of them would keep them under their plexiglass dividers on their desks or tape them to their desks once the plexiglass was removed so they could look at them often.

In the past, I have sent positive notes home. Now, they are often in e-mail form. I make sure to praise the student for something that s/he has done or improved in, and then I send a note home to the parents so they can celebrate that success as well. It doesn’t have to be an academic success but could simply consist of a kindness they did for someone else. It’s important for parents to hear from teachers…not just for disciplinary reasons.

Spend time getting to know students and parents.
love them and show it
Emails and phone calls -
Spend extra time getting to know each one of them and their families in order to support their needs. Help them discover their strengths and talents and challenge them. Show genuine love for them.
