I let them pray together as a group for their families and share the bad and good things happening to them. I allow time in the classroom to play videos of the outside of the school activities or family trips that are important to them, in this way they feel they are important to me and that in any situation they have they can count on me as a teacher and the rest of the group.

First, I tend to encourage them, by looking for legitimate strengths and gifts they have.

Second, I try to listen to them without condemnation, encouraging them with scriptures.

In my art courses, whenever I am teaching and it is time for students to paint or draw, I will go round table by table to encourage them as they draw try to make see that they can do it and I am here for them to show them the ”how”. I do take my students out for art exhibitions to see the real world in action what other professionals have done, usually, they will be so encouraged by the excursion.

As the guidance counselor I have a unique job of being more intentional about reaching out to students. I try to catch as many as I can in a day and just ask them what’s going on or if there is anything I can pray with them about. It’s wonderful when they open up and know that someone genuinely cares. I think offering more outreach with parenting helps would also be helpful.

One of the practices that I like to use with students is to ask them if they are reading the Bible and what they are reading. I like to ask them what they are learning from that.

Another practice that I like to use is to encourage students to send me an email of their attempts on math problems that they are not sure about. That allows me to review and diagnose where they have gaps in understanding or simple mistakes that they are not catching.
