One of the practices that I like to use with students is to ask them if they are reading the Bible and what they are reading. I like to ask them what they are learning from that.
Another practice that I like to use is to encourage students to send me an email of their attempts on math problems that they are not sure about. That allows me to review and diagnose where they have gaps in understanding or simple mistakes that they are not catching.

One thing I do is intentionally ask students what they have going on during the week (sports, trips, church events) and then be sure to intentionally follow up with them later to see how said event went.
As the Bible teacher and spiritual life director at my school I have an open door policy where students can come talk to me about any questions they have. A cool example was when I spent the first 10-15 minutes of lunch standing with a student in the lunch room explaining baptism and its purpose.

I want to implement more hands-on learning. I love to cook and bake, so I would love to have a cooking/ baking lesson every Friday. I would also like to implement more centers in my classroom. I need to get out of my head that learning is only taking place when the classroom is quiet, and students are listening and sitting still.

One thing that I have already implemented in my classroom that demonstrates the care and the commitment to my students is my door is always open! That means from the very beginning I let my students know I am always here for them if they come up I take the time to talk to them even if I have 1000 things going on I make that student priority. One of the other things that I do each day in my classroom is that I pray specific for each child using their name, for them, their struggles, their talents for their accomplishments.

One simple way to demonstrate that we care and are committed to our students is to pray with them daily. The few minutes that we take at the beginning of course often provide insights that we completely miss when we dive into instruction too quickly. I’ve also found it helpful to ask occasionally how they are doing in terms of stress and workload. Adjusting due dates or allowing extensions is another practical way to communicate that we recognize the pressures many of our students are struggling to balance.
