One thing that I do is if a child is doing bad on work, I would compare it the 99 sheep and the lost 1. I would go to the student and we would try to determine what is holding him/her back. Then I would teach it over again until he/she gets it.

More one-on-one connections with students…I think this helps them to feel valued and loved.

One new practice I would like to implement this coming school year is a checklist of students names and using that list to make sure I speak to each student individually throughout each month. As a teacher who has taught for many years, it is easy to get into a routine of easily calling on or having a conversation with the high achieving student or correcting a low student. So, this list would make it intentional that I have a meaningful conversation with each student throughout the year.

Communication. Communicate more with their parents on a regular basis.

Art is such a unique course. I am able to encourage students in ways that others can’t. I grade mostly for effort and try to find something positive to say to each of the students individually. It is very subjective and uniqueness is treasured. I try to create a space, in my course, where the kids can relax and enjoy themselves in the midst of what can be a stressful day. That is what Art was for me and I want to do the same for them.
