A new practice that I implemented this year was the implementation of goal setting and one-on-one meeting with students. I had students set specific goals for themselves for academics and relationships. Students filled out goal sheets once per quarter, and I met with them individually to go over their goals and brainstorm ways to help them reach their goals. I asked them how I can best support them in reaching their goals, and I let them know that I am available for any help they need. The one-on-one meetings were invaluable, and it helped me to connect with my students and offer them encouragement and support.

I have postcards that I purchased that I would like to periodically send home as encouragement to students in my classroom. I always greet students at my door when they walk in and greet students in the hallway between classes. I like to ask them about their day and briefly give them a smile. I also like to show up at sporting events and other competitions to cheer on my students.

I would like to integrate one-on-one meetings with students at least once a semester where I can give them personal feedback, establish more rapport, and get their feedback. I already give them a lot of encouragement in personalized gifts and notes of love often during the year — most significantly at Thanksgiving, Valentines Day, and St. Patricks Day.

There are two things I could not leave without in the classroom. Praying time with my students. They have the opportunity to share their prayer requests and we pray about it together. Secondly, our bible discussions that always turn into life discussions. We talk about everything, this is a special moment when they have the opportunity to ask all kinds of questions.

More encouragement. Acknowledge the hard things but let them know I believe in them.
