Young children(I teach 2nd grade) are generally very selfish. It takes time to develop the self control to stop and think before acting. I like to ask them questions about how they would feel if the offense they committed was committed against them and what they can do to make it right with others. Instead of instantly tattling on others who may be bothering them, I encourage them to practice Matt. 18 and go their “brother” and try to settle the matter between themselves before I get involved. I want them to learn how to treat each other with respect and that unity is one of our main goals.
I would like to incorporate more service opportunities into the school year as well, teaching them the joy that comes from putting Christ and others before themselves and that they can truly make a big difference despite their young age.

The Bible is full of common sense that is no longer common in society and can help to ground and center our students to make sure that they are following the ways of the Bible and not the ways of the world. Helping our students to rely on the foundation of Jesus Christ as their savior will make them more able to face the problems of the world.

Prayer with and for students reminds all of us of our need to depend on God above all else for guidance, direction, encouragement, and strength. With this tool, students have the ability to connect to a heavenly Father and seek his perspective in any and all circumstances. When able and applicable, show how the truth of God’s word used correctly provides a lens through which to see the world rightly with God at the center rather than ourselves, our nation, or current cultural perspectives which shift with popular thought and geographic location. Showing how His truth directs our steps in all aspects of our life – both as teachers, family members, and people in a community – as well as the ways we have fallen short in pursuing his truth when we have lost sight of or ignored His direction provides students with powerful and practical examples of grace and learning in action.

I find it difficult to tell them stories without wrapping up and serving them the moral at the same time and I need to get better at that. Also, I find that showing them grace, and reminding them where that grace comes from, is an effective way of resolving an issue and showing my worldview.
