These questions tell us everything we need to know about a book of the Bible. We get to know the author, the recipients, their relationship, the book’s major theme or themes, the organization of the book, the environment for both the writer and audience, when each book was written, and why the book was written, which gives us the purpose. Without these answers, it would be more difficult to understand passages in the Bible.

-Who – Who wrote the book, and who was it written to? What do we know about their relationship?
-What – What is the book’s major theme or themes?
-How – How is the book’s content organised?
-Where – Where was the writer and the recipient(s) at the time?
-When – When was the book written?
-Why – Why was the book written; what is it’s purpose?

Who: You understand who wrote it and who the intended audience was.
What: You understand the type of book it is, and its themes.
How: You understand the overall organization of the book
Where: You understand where the author wrote it (from) and where the audience received it, as well as where the events took place.
When: When it was written, as well as when the events took place
Why: You understand the purpose behind the writing of the book.
This allows you to understand context which may influence meaning.
