To truly love someone is to love them according to Scripture’s definition of love (1 Corinthians 13). Without a knowledge of how Scripture defines love, and seeing the example of how God demonstrated love to us through the giving of his son, we can not truly love here on earth. Therefore, the love a Christian shows to others is based on the truth of the word.

Loving one another is based on truth because Scripture teaches us that we love because God first loved us! It is only through His love for us that we can love others!

God references Himself several times throughout scripture as “truth.” We are commanded to love our neighbor. We are made in His image. We being image-bearers should carry the truth of the Gospel and do so in love as we are commanded in the Great Commandment.

The lecturer continues by saying, “We love one another because we know God has asked us to.” We love others by speaking truthfully, building trust in our relationships, and avoiding deceitful behavior. Truth is a foundation for love because we can experience sacrificial kindness from people who do not want to fill their lives with lies. We can give ourselves in love when we are confident that the cause is true and reliable.

As Christian educators, we must graciously speak truth. We should not be harsh in speaking the truth, or we will turn people away from God’s message. We must spend time in God’s Word, especially the book of Proverbs to know how and when to correct.
