Jesus said He is the Truth. The Bible tells us we love because He first loved us. To love others is based on the Truth. When we anchor on Him as our truth, we also find ourselves speaking the truth in love. That may mean conversations from Scripture that are difficult, but they can be held in love.

God’s truth allows us to view one another as God views people. To love someone you must place an importance upon them and see their value. If that value is based on what that person does for you love will come and go. If that love for the person is based on the truth that the person is made in the image of God with the same purpose to bring glory to God the love will endure.

When we truly love our students, we need to give correction when necessary. That does not mean we degrade them and treat them like they are horrible human beings. We need to come beside them and encourage them. We need to lead them to scriptures that can help guide them. We need to graciously speak truth in love. We also need to let them make mistakes and deal with the consequences of their mistakes. Yet be there for them to let them know they are still loved. We all have sinned and fall short of God’s glory. So I need to be there for my students even when they stumble and make bad decisions.

I think when the lecture is speaking about “love one another is based on truth”, means if we are true to God and we truly love those around us when we speak the truth to them, in a kind and a caring loving way. We should not try to be tolerant of what people are saying. We need to speak the truth always, even though it might upset or offend someone.

When we understand who God is, who we are, and how God sees each of us, then we are able to see as God sees and love each other. Our love for others grows out of the recognition of God’s love for us.
