What do you think the lecturer means when she says “loving one another is based on truth”? Why is this an important concept to understand?

Real truth is God’s word, based on His character. Loving one another is based on truth because Jesus tells us it is essential behavior for his children. Living out the love we have received from God, reproducing it in our relationships, is living out God’s word and command for His people.

It’s not loving to let something live their life in a sinful way. We must know the truth and instruct the truth to people in a loving way so that they can have the life that God intended for them. This is an important concept to understand because it involves having to know the Word and the truths that are in the Word so that we can lovingly correct others.

It is important to always love one another based on truth, because we must love one another always, even when we judge them as “unworthy” of love. Jesus walked with the ones that no one judged to be worthy of his love. It is such a powerful and beautiful example of true love.

If we only love when we ‘feel like it,’ the people around us would be in for a stormy season of emotions. Love is a discipline, and you need the truth of it being a command to help you sometimes ‘set your face like flint’ and do it. Also, the idea that if love is based on truth, it is a love that sees the real in others and loves then anyhow. And this is possible based on the truth that God made each of us and therefore each of us has value no matter who we are, and therefore are to be loved as God loves them.

If we are all created in God’s image then loving one another becomes less of a chore.
