To love people in the way God requires of us, we have to want the best for them, and there is no greater good for people than the truth of salvation through Jesus Christ.

I think she means that loving one another does not preclude teachers and students from holding each other accountable in the face of ungodly behavior or hurtful mistakes. It’s important to not be permissive and to hold firm to our values as Jesus followers.

We are told in 1 John 4:8, Anyone who does not love does not know God because God is love.” To love our students and to teach them well, we must live and speak God’s truth. That is love, to teach His truth to ourselves and our students even when our students are resistant. We must continue to tell them God’s truth especially when they want to debate the point of the lesson.

When Christ was asked “What is the greatest commandment”, his response was:

“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Matthew 22:37-39

Scripture declares that loving the Lord and loving each other is the greatest command. Scripture is truth, and it is emphasized over and over again in scripture that the Lord loves us and that He created us to love others. Since Christ pointed out that loving the Lord and each other are the two most important commands, we should also value them as the most important commands. If we follow these two important commands, then everything else in life falls into place and we are able to face the tribulations in life with our hearts rooted in truth, faith and love.

If we let all that we do in the classroom be based on God’s love for us and all of His children, then we can help our students see truth.
